Last Year’s Highlights
The Curling Association of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (CA-UWSP) was founded in 2013 and created with the goal of sharing the Spirit of Curling. This new student organization has taken great strides in its short history. Its first season was marked by the accomplishment of earning enough points to reach placement in the top 16 schools for attending the Collegiate National Championships in Blaine, MN at the Four Seasons Curling Club. The Curling Association was also awarded “New Student Organization of the Year-2014” by UWSP’s Student Government Association.
The 2014-15 season allowed CA-UWSP growth in numbers, while sending multiple teams to collegiate bonspiels around the Midwest. Teams competed at the Rice Lake Bonspiel, Carrol College Bonspiel, Final Roar and their own inaugural Turkey Bonspiel. UWSP was ranked #1 in the nation when invited to return to competing in the Collegiate National Championship held at the Rochester Curling Club in Rochester, New York. After close matches against Minnesota, Harvard and Colgate, the Pointers defeated the University of Pennsylvania to win the USCA Collegiate National Championship in March of 2015. Team members included Ryan Kernosky, Becca Kelble, Evan Brauer, Kylie Abel, Jillian Behling and Michael Clemmons.
UWSP is located in central Wisconsin, where some of the highest concentrations of curlers in the Midwest, and the United States, can be found. As a result, some of the curlers on the UWSP team have already curled with or against each other during their high school curling careers. In addition to the friendships formed on the UWSP team, the camaraderie generated between other teams is awesome. UWSP makes it a point every year to curl head to heads against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and combines teams outside of collegiate play to compete in open bonspiels.
The Curling Association of UWSP experienced great publicity last year, being featured in various publications including The Stevens Point Journal and The New York Times. Creating awareness of curling on campus, locally and nationally, has been one of the goals of the CA-UWSP. The association encourages participation by individuals of all skill levels and is eager to spread their passion for the sport. Yes, they get competitive sometimes, but they mostly play the game because they love it. Pointers curler Aaron Gurholt attempted to explain why he enjoys curling so much to New York Times reporter Lauren Justice, and in so doing, coined the phrase, “Fist bumps for days.” You can read the entire story here: Swept Up in the Camaraderie
A Look Ahead to 2015-16
The Pointers plan to continue “fist bumping for days” this year, as they are hosting their 2nd Annual Turkey Spiel November 6th-8th to kick off the curling season. Teams from Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan will be participating. Another goal of the group includes qualifying for a return trip to the College Championships in Chaska, Minnesota in March.
